Laser Scar Removal in Boca Raton
Scars are practically unavoidable. Skin becomes damaged, and when it does a scar will form over the damaged area during the healing process. The scar tissue is usually thick and can also be discolored, raised, or dented. Some examples of common scarring skin trauma are acne, burns, surgery, injuries and skin conditions. In many cases, laser skin resurfacing can help diminish scars by vaporizing layers of the scar tissue and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin needed for a healthy, even skin tone. Of course the severity of the scarring is directly related to the severity of the original skin trauma. Treatment options vary somewhat depending on the type, and severity of scarring you have.
Scar mitigation treatments vary in terms of cost, complexity, recovery time and other factors. Each has it’s own list benefits and drawbacks, and no one solution is appropriate for all patients. Your doctor or trained laser technician will examine the area to be treated and then discuss appropriate treatment options for your condition based on the type, age, thickness and placement of your scar.
Scar Removal Options
Microneedling
Microneedling must be performed by a trained professional using a properly maintained device. You can find many DIY at home “roller” style devices, but should steer clear of these. Microneedling causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimizing cellular damage. The result is effective remodeling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact. There are three phases to the wound-repair process: Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue. Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops. Phase III: Remodeling. The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels. We use SkinPen, the first FDA cleared microneedling device, clinically proven to safely and effectively treat facial acne scars for ages 22 and up.
Radio Frequency Microneedling
Like microneedling, RF microneedling creates tiny injuries to the skin surface that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process. Where it differs is that RF microneedling adds radiofrequency heat energy to amplify collagen and elastin production. It also allows the operator better depth control for a more individualized treatment. RF microneedling is often desireable for more severe scarring cases.
Laser Resurfacing
This form of skin resurfacing involves applying laser energy directly to the scarred area. The laser targets only the damaged skin and evaporates the outer layer.
