Dermaplaning Treatments in Boca Raton
What is Dermaplaning?
A lot of people are comfortable with peels and serums, but many have yet to try dermaplaning. Although dermaplaning is often referred to as “face shaving” it is completely different from what guys do every morning. There is a lot of misinformation floating around the internet about this procedure, and there are even more DIY home product pages trying to convince you that you can do this yourself. You can’t, or at least you shouldn’t. Think about it. Does dragging a scalpel across your face while looking at the reverse image in a mirror sound like something you want to try? Didn’t think so.
Dermaplaning is one of our favorite skincare treatments. It’s quick, affordable and effective, but it should only be performed by a trained professional. This super effective exfoliation protocol consists of using a 10 gauge scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of dulling dead skin cells in order to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. It also eliminates the fine vellus hairs or “peach fuzz” leaving the surface very smooth.
Dermaplaning also allows for greater penetration of skincare products and creates a flawless canvas for makeup to glide on smoothly. In fact, cosmetic dermatologists sometimes use dermaplaning to help prepare skin for more intrusive procedures such as laser treatments and chemical peels.
Why Dermaplaning?
We prefer dermaplaning over microdermabrasion. They are both forms of physical exfoliation, but the methods are very different. Microdermabrasion sands and suctions dead skin cells, while dermaplaning safely scrapes off the top layer of skin, so it is well suited for more skin types and anyone who wants to get rid of peach fuzz.
Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types except those with acneic skin. If you have deep cystic acne, wait until breakouts are clear before trying this treatment. This is a great treatment if you are pregnant or nursing and want exfoliation without the risk of harsh chemicals absorbing into the blood stream and potentially harming your baby.
Dermaplaning is a painless procedure. There are no side effects and zero downtime. After the treatment, your skin will be highly sensitive to sun exposure and may already look very pink, so be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to reduce the risk of hyper-pigmentation.
You’ll immediately look more radiant with a more even skin tone and texture. All of your peach fuzz will be gone, which is why first-timers say their skin has never felt so soft before.
Dermaplaning FAQs
Nope. This is an old myth. The fact is shaving does not cause hair to grow back thicker or darker – no matter where it might be on your body. Shaving your legs or underarms doesn’t cause that hair to grow back thicker either. It is not possible for hair to grow back thicker because of shaving. What’s more, dermaplaning removes very fine hair called vellus hair. This hair is so thin and soft that removing it with a dermaplaning tool will have little to no impact on how it looks when it grows back. After removing the vellus hair, your skin will instantly feel and look smoother and brighter.
It will take a little over a week for the hair to begin coming back, but the treatment itself removes about 3 weeks worth of dead skin. We recommend not exceeding 1 time per month. It is important to let your skin rejuvenate between appointments.
Dermaplaning is actually one of the safest and least painful ways to remove facial hair and dead skin. Dermaplaning is performed with a very gentle scraping motion across the skin’s surface. Many patients describe it as a pleasant experience. Dermaplaning is entirely painless. There are risks of minor nicks and scrapes, but those are rare and heal within 24-48 hours.
No. It actually prevents breakouts. While dermaplaning can’t be performed on skin with active acne, it will prevent clogged pores and pimples from forming. By removing the top layer of dead skin cells, dermaplaning prevents these cells from getting trapped inside your pores. Less dead skin = fewer breakouts. By gently exfoliating the skin, dermaplaning also makes it easier for acne treatments and serums to penetrate into the pores to prevent and treat breakouts.
While some exfoliation methods (like scrubs) aren’t recommended for darker skin, dermaplaning is 100% safe. Dermaplaning is a type of manual exfoliation like a face scrub. However, unlike a scrub, dermaplaning doesn’t irritate or cause micro-abrasions in the skin so it won’t cause hyperpigmentation. It’s actually one of our favorite exfoliation methods for dark skin because it instantly removes the dark baby hair that can make deep skin look duller than it really is.
While it may take slightly longer during your first visit. dermaplaning shouldn’t take longer than 30-45 minutes.
This treatment is extremely safe when performed by an properly trained skincare professional. There is also no downtime associated with this procedure.
