Forehead Lines
Wrinkles on the forehead are very common and noticeable as we age. The forehead is particularly prone to wrinkling. Sun exposure, common facial movements and plain old aging all play a role in the development of permanent wrinkles in the forehead. Our skin contains two important proteins.
Collagen promotes stronger, thicker and firmer skin. Elastin contributes to skin’s elasticity and is what helps it to stretch and then snap back into place. As we age, our skin begins to produce less and less of both. As collagen production slows down, our skin loses its suppleness and firmness, causing wrinkles. When elastin begins to lose its flexibility, the skin doesn’t spring back into place like it used to.
Repetitive facial movements also cause wrinkles over time. The muscles that activate the forehead are involved in just about every facial expression we make. Over time those once temporary frown lines can become permanent forehead wrinkles.
So what can be done about Forehead Lines?
Botox and Dysport are known as “neuromodulators” and are considered the treatment of choice for deep forehead lines. They work by gently and safely paralyzing the muscle beneath the skin to temporarily prevent them from contracting. Results are seen over several days and last for 3 to 6 months.
Frown Lines
Frown lines are caused by gathering the tissue between the eyebrows into a fold. They are caused by the repeated action of underlying muscles associated with facial expression. Years of squinting and frowning tend to leave deep wrinkles in the skin between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose. On many people, frown lines produce an angry or sad look that detracts from a pleasant facial appearance.
Frown Lines form over time through the repeated movement of the facial skin by the muscles. Frown Lines are not only age related. Frown lines are dynamic they happen because of the way a person’s face moves. Because frown lines are created by facial movements such as frowning or squinting, they may develop even in younger adults.
The muscles above and between the eyebrows contract and tighten, and can cause wrinkles. Botulinum toxin in Botox and Dysport blocks the nerve signal that causes these facial muscles to contract. This results in a reduction of muscle activity in the treated area and temporarily stops the contraction of these muscles.
Thinning Lashes
There are many causes for thinning eyelashes, including poor makeup habits, regular “wear and tear” and normal aging. Some people rub their eyes frequently and even tug at their eyelashes. Obviously, these habits will contribute to eyelash breakage and thinning. Incorrect use of mascara is another main cause of eyelash thinning.
Leaving mascara on overnight, combing through mascara to remove clumps once it’s already dried and even continuing to use an old tube beyond 3 or 6 months are all detrimental to maintaining thick healthy eyelashes.
Eye infections such as pink eye, or other medical/health conditions like vitamin deficiency and hormone imbalances can lead to hair loss over the entire body, including the eyelash. Finally the natural aging process triggers a general reduction in hair growth over the whole body.
Latisse is a prescription product that is highly effective in promoting long and thick eyelash growth.
Crow’s Feet
Crow’s feet are the fine lines and wrinkles that branch out from the outer corners of your eyes toward your temples. Crow’s feet can appear to look deeper or more pronounced on the skin than some other wrinkles or expression lines on other areas of the face.
The reduction in collagen and elastin brought about by normal aging, along with repetitive muscle contraction during facial expression over years can create lasting wrinkles in the face. As we get older, our skin just doesn’t spring back as easily and the wrinkles tend to become more permanent.
Crow’s feet often show up first, and can occur earlier than other types of facial wrinkle because the skin in this area is so much thinner and lacks oil-secreting sebaceous glands, which according to researchers tends to reveal wrinkles more dramatically.
There are measures you can take to reduce the severity and depth of crow’s feet within your skin. Botox and Dysport are both effective in helping to minimize crows feet by preventing muscle contraction in the effected area.T
Under Eye Bags & Circles
Dark circles and bags under the eyes can make you appear older than you are, and can be difficult to get rid of. These are most common in the elderly and those with a genetic predisposition to this condition. Sleep deprivation can cause skin to become dull and pale, allowing dark tissues and blood vessels beneath your skin to show.
Natural aging is another common cause of those dark circles beneath your eyes. As you get older, your skin becomes thinner. As you lose the fat and collagen needed to maintain your skin’s elasticity, the dark blood vessels beneath your skin become more visible causing the area below your eyes to darken.
Long hours of screen time can cause significant eye strain, enlarging the blood vessels around the eyes, resulting in a darkening of the surrounding skin. Allergic reactions can also cause dark circles and puffiness. Of course, allergies can also lead to rubbing and scratching which will worsen symptoms.
Genetics,, a predispositions to thyroid disease and certain other medical conditions can also contribute. While dermal fillers can be effective in some cases, we most often prefer to treat first with products. Here are just some of the options available at DermPartners.
Flat Sunken Cheeks
In some people the the cheekbones are somewhat flat and don’t project enough to maintain a full and natural, youthful look. The face can lack appropriate balance.
In addition, as we age the body stops producing as much subcutaneous fat. That is the subdermal fat that makes cheeks plump. the underlying muscle structure that contributes to more rounded and less bony facial features also begins to weaken over time. The fat pads gradually slide down the face, while at the same time our bodies produce less collagen and elastin, which give skin elasticity and plumpness. The result is skin that begins to sag, wrinkle and dull. All this aging leaves behind, quite literally, sagging skin and bones.
Besides aging, poor diet or under eating and rapid weight loss can cause significant fat loss that leads to a sunken appearance. Smoking and poor skin health might also contribute to a lack of essential nutrients being delivered to the facial skin.
Soft tissue fillers and hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvéderm, Restylane, and Radiesse are the most common options for treating hollowed cheeks. These treatments are injected directly into the mid-face or hollowed section to volumize the cheek area. This non-surgical cheek enhancement option is an ideal choice for people who want a quick and simple treatment. Using the right type of filler in the right amount and injecting it with the proper technique can enhance the look of the cheeks and give them a natural look that’s not overdone.
Laugh Lines
As we age, we begin to notice more fine lines and wrinkles across the entire face and forehead. Unique skin structure means that women are more likely to develop wrinkles around the nose and mouth area than are men.
Lifestyle factors, such as over-exposure to the sun and in particular smoking can also increase your chances of developing fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nose. Those “smile lines” that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth are among the most common.

Vertical lip lines are mostly unavoidable simply due to regular mouth movement. However, these more than any other facial wrinkle are more prominent in smokers. Regular, repeated waxing of the upper lip can also contribute to these lines.
Many patients are also faced with thinning lips. Thin lips can be completely natural but they can also be a sign of aging. If you’ve noticed your lips getting thinner and losing their full, plump look, it’s probably as a result of a loss of collagen and a tiring of the muscles around the mouth as you get older. As with many other facial aging challenges, collagen depletion and UV exposure contribute greatly to thinning lips.

Sagging Jowls/Jawline
Double Chin
Neck Tightening
As we age our skin loses elasticity and begins to sag and become loose. As you may have figured out by now, the major culprits are the loss of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid brought about by the natural aging process. Environmental factors such as smoking and exposure to UV light also contribute to and accelerate the process. The areas around the jawline, chin and neck are particularly susceptible to the aging process.
Sometimes referred to as a “turkey neck,” sagging or loose skin in the chin and neck area, as well as the development of “jowls” are a common cosmetic concern for patients as they age. While some people elect surgical solutions, there are several very effective and far less invasive options available. For example, fillers like Juvederm Voluma XC can help to provide structure and shape to the jaw line.
Infini Radio Frequency microneedling can tighten skin in the area around the neck and chin. PDO Absorable Threads, aka a “thread lift” are needles that are pre-loaded with a PDO thread. Simply insert the whole needle in the tissue at sub-dermal level, parallel to the surface of the skin & pull the needle out. The PDO thread remains under the skin. The foreign body stimulates collagen synthesis & the skin structure created will hold for another 12 to 15 months.
A double chin can be treated with Kybella, an injectable that kills fat cells. Coolsculpting is also a highly effective option. Coolsculpting freezes the fat calls and your body eliminates it.

Decolletage
The upper portion of the torso, comprising the neck, shoulders, and chest, is known in the aesthetic world as the decolletage.
As we age, this area experiences wrinkling, from side sleeping and discoloration from sun damage. The décolletage presents a unique challenge in that the skin in this area is especially thin and tends to receive a lot of UV exposure over the years. Often referred to as “crepey” skin, the fine wrinkles can reveal your age in the same way hands do even when your facial regeme is on point.
Microneedling, RF microneedling, and laser treatments for discoloration can all help to reduce the signs of aging in the neck and chest. Additionally, the right chemical peel can assist with discoloration.

Stubborn Body Fat
The number of fat cells is set during childhood and adolescence. That number varies little in adulthood. The number of fat cells is specific to you and varies from person to person. There are several contributing factors involved in the calorie equation, such as genetics, physical activity levels, but in the simplest of terms, when we take in more calories than we burn over an extended period of time, the excess calories are stored throughout the body as fat. That fat is stored in the existing fat cells.
We often hear people state that the last 20 pounds are the hardest to lose and this may be true for a number of reasons. Coolsculpting is very effective in eliminating pockets of stubborn body fat. The unique CoolSculpting fat-freezing technology is a nonsurgical, scientifically proven way to reduce pockets of fat in trouble spots such as the abdomen, flanks, or under the chin in as little as one session. Patients can expect up to 20%-25% reduction in fat layer thickness after a single session, and results may be seen as early as 1 to 3 months after treatment.
The frozen fat cells become crystallized, then die. The dead fat cells then are naturally processed and eliminated by your body. Some patients wonder if the results are permanent. CoolSculpting results are long term because those fat cells, and that fat bulge, are gone for good.

Acne Scars
Acne produces inflamed blemishes because skin pores become engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. The swelling creates a break in the follicle wall. Minor blemishes usually heal quickly, but a deep break in the wall of the pore can cause infected material to spill over into surrounding tissue, creating deeper lesions. Scarring is commonly seen in cases of extreme or extended acne.
SkinPen is the first microneedling device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, clinically proven to safely and effectively treat facial acne scars for ages 22 and up. As few as three non-invasive and affordable treatments spaced 30 days apart can improve the appearance of acne scars for six months after the last treatment. SkinPen is also effective on wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin tone or stretch marks. SkinPen works by stimulating the skin’s natural ability to repair itself by producing new collagen and elastin for a healthier, younger looking appearance. SkinPen® may be used on all skin types.
Depending on the type of scarring, chemical peels can often be an effective aid in the reduction of facial acne scars. At DermPartners we often administer the VI Purify from VI Peel with great results.

Hyperpigmentation, Discoloration and Facial Redness
Pigment cells in your skin absorb the light energy. The light converts to heat, destroying the areas of unwanted pigment. When treating unwanted areas of pigmentation, targeted areas absorb the light and become hot for an instant. The heat breaks down the pigmentation into tiny particles. The body removes the resulting particles in one of two ways, depending on the treatment area. Either they rise to the skin’s surface as scabs, naturally exfoliated within a week or two, or they filter away through the body’s lymphatic system.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. People sometimes consider this treatment as a laser therapy, and will even refer to as a type of laser. It is not. IPL differs from a laser in that a laser focuses just one wavelength of light at your skin, while IPL releases light of many different wavelengths. The light from IPL is more scattered and less focused than a laser. IPL penetrates down to the second layer of your skin (dermis) without harming the top layer (epidermis), so it causes less damage to your skin.
IPL is a preferred treatment protocol because it is a gentle and effective means of reducing sun damage, age spots, freckles, birthmarks and similar pigmentation problems. It also safely and effectively brightens skin and evens pigmentation with no downtime and little risk of side effects. We are able to perform IPL on most parts of the body and patients most frequently have the treatment on the face, neck, chest and hands.
Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation more commonly seen in women. It is triggered by UV exposure and hormonal factors. These hormonal triggers are what differentiate melasma from other hyper-pigmentations and are what make it more challenging to treat. Melasma is easy to spot and tell from other dark spots. It appears as symmetric blotchy patches on the face, usually on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and upper lip.
Melasma can also appear on other parts of the body — especially those more often exposed to sunlight – such as the neck and forearms. Patients sometimes report that their melasma worsens in the summer, during pregnancy, or after starting birth control or other hormonal treatments.
IPL is not an effective treatment for melasma. In fact it could actually worsen the condition. Instead, we prefer to use laser therapy to treat melasma.
Facial redness is another common concern among patients and can take several forms. Rosacea is a common skin condition that affects people over the age of 30. It causes redness – and sometimes small bumps or pimples – on the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead. It also can cause burning and soreness in the eyes. The condition worsens when the blood vessels in the face expand. Common triggers are exercise, sun and wind exposure, hot weather, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, temperature swings and hot baths. Seborrhea is a chronic skin condition in which one or more persistent, red, scaly and dry patches of skin appear on the face. It can occur on the hairline, forehead, neck, ears and facial skin. It rarely occurs solely on the face. In many cases we can effectively address facial redness concerns with specific laser treatments based on the indivual patient’s unique situation.
We offer complimentary consultations with our expertly trained staff to help you determine the nature of your condition, listen to your concerns and then recommend the correct treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.

Laser Tattoo Removal
During the procedure, our trained laser technician guides a laser over the treatment area. This device delivers pulses of light energy which penetrate the skin and is absorbed by the tattoo ink. As the ink particles absorb the energy, they heat up and then break up into tiny fragments. Then, over the weeks following treatment, the body’s immune system flushes the tattoo ink particles away from the location and out of the body entirely, lightening the appearance of the tattoo. Each subsequent treatment breaks down more and more of the tattoo ink until none remains. Tattoo ink particles are extremely small and require only a brief heating period before they break into fragments. The surrounding skin cells are much larger by comparison and are left undamaged by the process.
Small older tattoos of a single color can sometimes be removed in a single session. Most however, take multiple sessions over time to completely remove the tattoo. Individual sessions can last from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the area and the tattoo.
Tattoo removal cost is tied to the tattoo’s size, colors and the number of sessions required. Interested patients can schedule a complimentary consultation where our laser technician will evaluate the tattoo and provide a cost and time frame estimate. She will also discuss payment and financing options.
